Explore the History of the American West

The American West is a story of exploration, survival, and independence that spans thousands of years. Our Western Heritage Museum brings that story to life through exhibits that highlight the people, tools, and traditions that shaped the frontier. From the early Plains tribes who lived in harmony with the land, to the Lewis and Clark expedition that mapped new territory, to the legendary mountain men who explored and trapped across the Rockies, the museum offers a glimpse into the defining moments of Western history. Visitors can explore artifacts, historical displays, and educational exhibits that illustrate how firearms, horses, and rugged determination helped shape life across the plains, deserts, and mountains of the American West.

Plains Power

American Indians have hunted across the West for thousands of years, initially using such techniques as game drives to force bison over cliffs so they could be killed with hand-held spears. By 1710 two movements were underway that would revolutionize the lives of these native people. Horses began arriving in the Southwest coming north from Central America and Mexico.

Lewis & Clark

When Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark organized their Corps of Discovery they selected 15 men to accompany them. They chose firearms that would be reliable over the course of a two-year expedition, necessary for that most essential pursuit - hunting!

Mountain Men

The Hawken rifle was the firearm of the mountain men. The Hawken brothers made the first gun in 1823 for William H. Ashley, who along with partner Andrew Henry advertised for 100 young men to work for their Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Among those responding to the call to trap beaver in streams was young Jim Bridger, who would find his place in the West.
